Short answer
Most often, either its website doesn't say it offers climate-controlled units, or our script couldn't read the site. It may also be in a state we haven't covered yet. If you run the facility, or know it offers climate control, tell us and we'll recheck it.
A missing facility doesn’t mean it lacks climate control. It means we couldn’t confirm it from the facility’s own website. We list only what we can quote.
The most common reasons
Out of 10,359 facilities we checked, 5,863 aren’t listed. Here’s why:
| Reason | Facilities |
|---|---|
| Site blocks automated visits, or was skipped for that reason | 2,066 |
| Page has almost no readable text (it needs JavaScript to load) | 808 |
| Website doesn’t mention climate control | 1,342 |
| Chain site’s features list doesn’t include climate control | 585 |
| Mention found only in hidden page data | 675 |
| Page error, such as a broken link | 135 |
| Mention needed a manual check | 118 |
| Only site-wide wording, not about that location | 81 |
| Wording said it doesn’t offer it | 53 |
The last row combines 31 pages our script flagged plus 22 more we removed by hand. Numbers are from our October 2026 check.
“My facility does offer climate control”
It may well. Some of the common cases:
- It’s on a different page. We read the location page linked from the facility’s Google listing. If climate control is mentioned only on a separate “units” page, we may have missed it.
- The site loads by JavaScript. If the page shows little text until scripts run, our reader sees an empty page.
- The site blocks automated visitors. Some sites refuse requests that don’t come from a regular browser.
- The wording is unusual. We look for phrases like “climate-controlled,” “temperature-controlled” and “heated and cooled.” Something like “conditioned space” may not match.
“My state isn’t on the site”
We currently cover 32 states plus Washington, DC. Coverage depends on the facility listings we’ve gathered so far. If your state isn’t on the home page, we haven’t checked it yet.
How to get a facility added
If you run the facility:
- Make sure your location page says plainly that you offer climate-controlled units.
- Use the listing form to send us the page address.
- We’ll recheck it. If the page says it, the listing goes up with that line quoted.
If you’re a renter who knows a facility offers climate control, use the same form or the “Ask a question” button on the storage questions page. We’ll check the site.
What we won’t do
We won’t list a facility based on a phone call, a review or another directory. The point of the site is that every listing can be checked against the facility’s own words. See how we verify facilities for the full method.
